Huawei GR5 2017 Review Price Specs Philippines

We reviewed the budget dual camera smartphone - Huawei GR5 2017! or Huawei Mate 9 Lite slash Honor 6x.

Huawei GR5 2017 Package: Unit, Charger, Data Cable, Headset, Case

Huawei GR5 2017 is solidly built with combination of polycarbonate and aluminum. Features a metal back but it is not removable so don't try to pry things. At top lies headphone jack and mic while bottom speaker grills and MicroUSB port is found. Right Side is the power/lock button as well as Volume Rocker. The hybrid sim and microSD slot is situated at the left side of the phone. At the Back is the Dual-Camera setup plus Fingerprint scanner.

Upfront is the 5.5 inch Full HD Display with 2.5D Curved Glass that is hold by plastic rim. The rim is a construction concern though as it might break in the long run. Well a sturdy case should protect it. Display is large enough to enjoy watching movies and playing games.

Powering the Huawei GR5 2017 is Huawei's Kirin 655 with Mali T830 GPU coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB Internal Storage (22GB Useable). You can add storage via microSD but you need to sacrifice dual sim feature. Per benchmark it did fair well at 57K Antutu Score. Well if that does'nt convince you, we played NBA 2K17 and it ran smoothly with combination of High and Medium settings. Memory management is excellent as it is able to do multitasking very well even via split screen.

Moving on to Huawei GR5 2017 main feature is its Dual Camera setup witth 12MP (Sony IMX 386) plus 2MP Rear Camera. Well we let its outputs speak for itself.

Here is day shots, the ones we shot when we were at Pampanga for Philippine Balloon Festival! As you can see it has great dynamic range with good control of highlights and shadows where details can still be seen. Color reporduction is on point.

Let's do some bokeh with food, flora, and fauna. It works yes but not that perfect. As you can see you get that blurred background yet still keeping your subject in focus. You can adjust how swallow depth of field you want before or after you take the photos. Yet it is software base and you will notice some of its blur are not that clean either lacking or over blur. Still you get that bokeh effect in a midrange phone.

As for low light, still Huawei GR5 2017 delivers. Would you belive it can take detailed clean photos at ISO 5000! Yes, see that tinderacat picture. Clearly, this shows the power of Sony IMX 386 that supports higher iso and is a bigger sensor at 1/2.9", 1.25um. You could also use night mode to get a clearer shot but use a tripod.

You have Manual Controls and other modes like HDR and Light Painting for more creative control. We had fun and was able to achieve shots even without filters and accessories from light speed highway, silky water fountain, long exposure in daylight and fireworks. Well you can't do all those with other brand.

Long Exposure Daylight | Night Light Trails
Silky Water | Startrails | Fireworks
For Videos, it records Full HD and has Pro Video, Timelapse and Slowmo Modes.

Although it is a different story when it comes to the front camera. It just offers Fixed Focus at 8MP. Well lets just say P9 Lite is better. Just make sure you have enough light. The Display Selfie Flash does help in low light and shooting indoor.

Huawei GR5 2017 is a dual sim handset however since its hybrid you need to choose between storage or this feature. Makes use of MicroUSB for direct connection and supports USB OTG. For wireless, the regulars are present such as WiFI, Bluetooth and GPS. Supports LTE for faster data internet on the go. Comes with near complete sensors including gyroscope to support Augmented Reality (AR) and VR. Miracast is supported via Huawei Mirror Share.

Runs on EMUI 4.1 but with comparison to that same version used by P9, GR5 2017 offers more with View Mode and Split Screen Multitasking. Huawei GR5 2017 runs pretty smooth and fluid even with more running apps in the background even at 3GB. Does have management tools such as battery, system, spam filters and more. Based on Marshmallow but I think it will be upgradeable to lollipop soon enough with EMUI 5.0.

Carries a 3340mAh battery and with its not so power hungry internals, it manage to last a day without charging of moderate use of course. Charges off with its 2A Charger for more or less 2 Hours.

Overall, I would really recommend Huawei Gr5 2017 as it is very well rounded device with its large display, dependable hardware, good battery life and of course its rear camera for photography. Dual Camera setup is a plus to get those bokeh shots like those you get from dslr cameras. Huawei EMUI is also more polish and is optimized for performance and efficiency. Would really commend the Huawei team for working on a budget Dual Camera Smartphone that is way ahead of its competition. Let's just say it is one best product in the market at of the moment(for its price range  that is).
